Korean embroidery is a traditional needlework art originating from the Korean Peninsula, distinguished particularly by North Korea’s systematic and artistic development of the craft. With a long history, it was designated as a national intangible cultural heritage by North Korea in 2016. Traditionally, embroidery served both court ceremonies and daily folk life. In contemporary North Korea, the craft is state-directed and practiced by specialized “embroidery artists.” Its most notable feature is the pursuit of extreme hyper-realism, often depicting animals, flowers, and landscapes with vivid, meticulous stitching in labor-intensive creations. At the same time, works reflecting political and leadership themes also hold significant importance. This art form not only demonstrates exceptional technical skill but also carries distinct cultural and historical imprints, garnering attention in specific international collecting circles.
